Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for My Kids?

The thought of sitting in a dentist's chair, having strange instruments in their mouths, and possibly experiencing pain can be overwhelming for kids. It's no wonder most of them dread visiting the dentist.

At Sprouting Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, our San Diego pediatric dentists strive to make every visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible for our young patients. One way we do this is by offering sedation dentistry. But what exactly does sedation dentistry entail and is it safe for kids?

What Exactly is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry generally refers to the use of medication to help patients relax and feel more comfortable during dental procedures. There are several types of sedation used in Pediatric Dentistry, including:

  • Nitrous Oxide(laughing gas): This is a gas and, therefore, it’s usually administered through a nasal cannula mask to help patients feel calm and content. It's safe and quick to wear off.
  • Oral Sedation: This is a form of sedation where medication is given to the patient orally. It’s usually a mild to moderate form of sedation and can make your child feel drowsy or even fall asleep during the procedure.
  • IV Sedation: This is a form of sedation where medication is given to the patient intravenously. It’s a deeper form of sedation and is typically used for more complex procedures.

What Sedation Method Do We Use at Sprouting Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Is It Safe?

At Sprouting Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we use nitrous oxide as the preferred sedation method. This type of sedation is safe with little to no side effects. Other than temporary nausea, or uncontrollable giggles that your child may experience as the sedation wears off, there’s really nothing to worry about.

Plus, our experienced pediatric dentists and anesthesiologists are trained to administer sedation in a safe and controlled manner. Additionally, we closely monitor your child's vital signs during the procedure to ensure that they are safe and comfortable.

However, as a parent, you also play a role in ensuring your child gets the best dental care and sedation experience. Here’s where you come in:

Before Sedation

  • Avoid giving your child solid foods before sedation. This will help prevent any discomfort or nausea during the procedure.
  • Answer all the healthcare provider's questions about your child's current and past health status, including any allergies or medications they are currently taking. This will allow us to make an informed decision on the best type of sedation for your child.

After Sedation

  • Keep your child well-hydrated by giving them plenty of water to drink.
  • When it's time to feed, give your child soft foods like mashed vegetables, smoothies, or soup. This will help them regain their energy without causing discomfort to the mouth.
  • Closely monitor your child to ensure that they are feeling okay and that they are not experiencing any unusual side effects.
