What is the Most Common Sedative Used For Pediatric Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is an important part of going to the dentist. Some patients cannot make it through even the most simple dental procedures without it.

Sedation is often used to help people with dental anxiety and disability remain calm and relaxed while in the dentist’s chair. It’s also used for patients who need to undergo extensive treatments, to help them remain comfortable. And it’s even commonly used for children.

But as a parent, you may be wondering what type of sedation your child might need during their appointment and whether it’s safe for them. While there are many types of sedation for children, the most common one used is laughing gas.

Keep reading to find out more about it and how it works.

What Is Laughing Gas?

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is a type of gas that when inhaled has a calming effect. It’s the number 1 sedative used in pediatric dentistry because it’s considered very mild, and its effects don’t linger very long.

The child will essentially inhale the gas through a nasal mask. Right away, they will begin to feel more at ease, and even become more giggly, which is where nitrous oxide got its “laughing gas” nickname.

The child remains fully conscious at all times and is able to hear your voice and even follow instructions. Once the procedure is done, your San Diego pediatric dentist will switch from nitrous oxide gas to pure oxygen. With every inhale, the laughing gas is pushed out of the child’s system.

By the time you’re ready to leave, your child will not be under the effects of the sedatives anymore. They may be a bit sleepy and not even remember the procedure at all.

Is Laughing Gas Safe?

Yes, laughing gas is considered completely safe and even recommended by The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). For any type of pediatric sedation, the dentist will recommend it only when completely necessary, and only after they review the child’s medical history to ensure they make the right choice.

When Does My Child Need Laughing Gas?

In general, sedation is recommended for children who:

  • Have a strong fear of the dentist
  • Are very young and cannot follow instructions or remain still for too long
  • Have a motor disability preventing them from remaining still
  • Need a lengthy dental procedure
